"For much of our campaign the sole opposition was Councillor Alan Craig, of the CPA, he is a member of Friends of Queen's Market and a tireless champion of non-invasive refurbishment.

Save Queens Market

Queens Market is a thriving, diverse market on Green Street, Upton Park, in Newham. It is world renowned as a market that provides for all cultures and interests. It is a jewel in Newham's crown.

"We are working alongside them to save the market and to protect the livelihoods it provides for"

Against all logic and understanding, Newham's Labour Mayor and his team approved plans to bulldoze it down and build an unnecessary, more expensive superstore. Without talking to local people he appointed a property developer - St Modwen's. St Modwen wanted to demolish the existing covered street market and replace it with an Asda-Walmart superstore, over 220 executive apartments and a market-in-a-mall.

The Christian Peoples Alliance helped set up the independent campaign group 'Friends of Queens Market'. After working alongside them to save the market and to protect the livelihoods it provides for, ASDA withdrew their original plans. However, it now transpires that new ideas from St Modwen's will see some 370 dwellings built and the Queens' pub (popular watering-hole for West Ham United home and away football fans) demolished and not replaced.
The clock is ticking and the campaign continues. For further information of how you can sign a petition or support the campaign please contact us.

Cllr Alan Craig has met and chatted to traders and shopkeepers in Queens Market as he fights the council's wish to close the market and replace it with a Superstore.

Support for Rathbone Market Traders

CPA Newham favours local markets as a source of fresh, affordable and varied food. But Labour is doing all it can to undermine them. Under pressure from big supermarkets, Rathbone Market has declined in recent years. Its landlord Newham Council has done little to help - and some say it has been active against the interests of the traders.

Cllr Alan Craig has set up meetings with disillusioned traders. Together they set up the Rathbone Traders Action Group. A committee has been formed, a bank account opened, and the Group has scored some successes. Town hall bosses met the Group twice in a month and changes have been started. Council officers are now working with traders to develop individually tailored plans for the future.

Never underestimate the powerful effect of people working together at local level!
