"'I had no heating or hot water and the Christian Peoples alliance got in touch with Newham Home Improvement Agency. They fitted central heating, now I am warm and cosy.'"

Royal Docks By-Election

The Royal Docks By-Election was one of the hardest fought in Newham for
many years. It even saw Olympics minister, Tessa Jowell, out campaigning
for Labour and the Conservatives flooding the ward with both leaflets and
activists. Despite a first-class candidate and campaign, the Christian
Peoples Alliance vote was 'squeezed' by the presence of the big parties.

The result was:

Stephen Brayshaw; Labour Party - 723 ELECTED
Haroon Juneja; Respect - 35
Neil Pearce; Conservative Party - 708
Anne-Marie Philip; Christian Peoples Alliance - 94
Turnout: 22.81 per cent

Anne-Marie Philip commented:

"It has been a privilege to meet and speak to so many people in E16 during
the course of the campaign. I'm obviously disappointed that I didn't get
elected but offer my congratulations to Stephen Brayshaw. I now look
forward to continuing my work for the community, putting Christian
principles into action."

The Royal Docks By-Election is about whether the people of Britannia Village, Silvertown and North Woolwich will come before Politics. On March 26th make sure your vote makes the difference.

The Christian Peoples Alliance have a bright young candidate who herself lives in E16. Anne-Marie PHILIP is standing in the forthcoming election to be a voice on Newham Council for the people of Royal Docks Ward.

Your vote really can make a difference.

The Christian Peoples Alliance councillors on Newham Council have earned a reputation for campaigning all year round for the residents of E16. Over 1200 local people have been helped since the Christian Peoples Alliance got a voice on Newham Council.

Councillor Alan Craig is delighted to have Anne-Marie joining the team. 'She is very exciting and really wants to serve the community,' says Alan.

Anne-Marie PHILIP is a worker and a winner. Make sure Britannia Village, Silvertown and North Woolwich aren't taken for granted any longer.

Vote Christian People Alliance and Anne-Marie PHILIP.

Anne-Marie is against the expansion of City Airport because of the noise pollution it will generate and the additional number of cars and taxis that will park in our streets.

Anne-Marie's Pledges to Royal Docks

1) Tell us a little about your background
I work for City Gateway, a charity working with disengaged young people and women in Tower Hamlets, by day and am passionate about my community by
night. I got involved with local politics when I fell off my bicycle after going over a big pothole, and my local councillor Denise Stafford from the Christian Peoples Alliance got it sorted. This area needs a councillor who will put people before politics and that is what impresses me about the Christian Peoples Alliance.

2) What is the most important issue to residents of your ward?
Quality of life issues like jobs, schooling and community really matter for everyone. Long-standing residents need hope they will move up the housing waiting list. If you live near King George V, overcrowding on the DLR trains and the noise pollution from London City airport are top issues. Residents towards Britannia Village will be concerned about the threat to local GP services posed by a polyclinic. We know from doctors who wrote to the Christian Peoples Alliance that they fear closure.

3) What can be done to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour locally?
As your councillor, I'll campaign for more youth clubs run by people who are mentoring them, as well as running leisure activities. Young people need to be engaged in positive activities. I'll demand cleaner streets with more bins, including for recyclables. And I want to see community projects to renew our gardens and parks. If as a community we work together on this we will create a positive system of accountability which will tackle crime at the roots.

4) What can be done to improve transport links to the area?
As councillor I will press for more regular DLR services between Woolwich Arsenal and Canning Town (this is the main interchange). If a shuttle service were to run during peak hours it would ease the morning congestion and DLR trains could turn around easily at Canning Town. I see a good case for using transport along the river Thames and will make sure this gets looked into. And I want to see something done about the car parking problem.

5) What are your views on the planned flight increase at London City Airport?
I have been campaigning for a public inquiry into the decision by the Town Hall and the London Mayor to approve a 50% increase in flights. Existing noxious fumes, the terrible noise pollution and parking pressure on local streets makes it hard enough for local people at the moment. The joint Lab/Con deal to increase flights will only make matters worse. It is outrageous that London City Airport failed to take reliable noise or air quality readings for the past 8 years.

6) What other issues do you plan to tackle if elected in Royal Docks?
I will tackle litter in a massive way. My experience of community work in the East end tells me that when people drop litter the aesthetics of the place deteriorate and similarly so do people's opinion of the area. I will engage young people in clearing up the ward and making positive murals in blank spaces as opposed to graffiti. I will also crack down on the sugar residue which covers cars, windows and houses by the factories.
